Anyone ever heard of them? Their menu is pretty good for the price.

one field report

I haven't used this service myself yet, but here's an email from one of my Meetup group members:

"I've done this for the past two months and am pretty happy with this deal.

An organization called Angel Food Ministries offers inexpensive food to anyone. It is geared for a family of four, food for one week. That's the basic package. You can get other packages.

There are pickup points all over the place, I am fortunate, my pickup point is a church about two miles form my home.

The food is not "day old" spoiled or anything. What it is I would liken to mass food preparing places like schools and such. The frozen foods are not Stouffers, but more like Banquet. The roasts and such are fine, not USDA Prime, but harldy Alpo either. The fresh fruits and veggies are fine.

$30 for a week of food for a family... right on.

What you do is either drop a check off at the pick up place or you can checkout online. Then on the pickup date, take a laundry basket or whatever and go pick up your food.

You need to get the main "box" and then you can add the other add on packages if you wish.

You can see the menus and procedure here:

http://www.angelfoodministries.com/menu_0812en.asp

I was a bit skeptical the first time, after doing it twice this is the real deal."

Not to be a party pooper but did anyone consider this food may be for those with bare cupboards and not those whom are looking to stock 1000+ lbs. Obviously LDS is another story...

I personally only planned to use it just for that. Feeding my 4 kids. They say there is no limit on the # of boxes you can order but I don't plan to order more than 6 boxes. That should be enough for a month.

Now the money I save I planned to use for longer term preps.

For one, a lot of the stuff is perishable - I don't think you'd want to use it for long-term preps.

As for "saving some for the less fortunate," the website itself says that many of the ministries that participate encourage people who don't really "need it" to take part - and then donate any savings to charity.

Our local news ran a story about Angel Food and one of its participating ministries. It emphasized that there were no income requirements - all are welcome. The products are high-quality items that you'd find in the supermarket, not off-brand seconds (which I really don't have a problem with anyway, but you get the picture.) They say they can offer the food at these prices because they buy in bulk - according to the story, even a larger scale than WalMart.

Hey, I've got a daughter that will be heading out into the world before I know it. I think this would be perfect for people living away from home for the first time or for young couples starting out.

Why duplicate the wheel?

There are organizations operating in every major community doing this work already. Pour your money & effort into them, and reduce unnecessary overhead. This Angel Food outfit doesn't even have an active location within 100 miles of me (that's an area with about a million people).

The Mormons have perhaps the finest network of food support in the world, with Bishop's storehouses in even small towns (http://www.mormonwiki.com/Bishop%27s_Storehouses) - no, I am NOT a Mormon. There are plenty of other denominations if church-institution teachings are more important than the actual work of Christ, if the wants of a particular individual demand certain church-institution teachings to be involved.

The act of giving to the needy in the name of Christ is all that is required for one to do the work of Christ - doesn't matter if the "right" Bible tract is included or not. Forgive me if I'm wrong, this looks more like a "church-institution-building" mission than a Good Samaritan-focused mission (from the website: "The Servant magazine is included in each box of Angel Food. This publication provides current information about Angel Food Ministries, inspiring articles, the next months menu, reports from various host sites, and much more.")

Try these instead:

Re: Angle Food Ministries

OK, here is my take ... I went there earlier and paid, and then today, went and picked it up.

I ordered 1 of the regular box and 1 of the "senior/convenience" boxes, which is 10 meals in a "Lean Cuisine" style plastic tray, just microwave and eat.

First, the regular box is pretty decent, food seems of decent quality and the $28 for the box seems reasonable - I am a cheap bastard when shopping, so the $28 is what I might be able to get it for, IF I hit all the grocery sales at the right time.

All the meat is vacuum packed except for the leg quarters, and between the 2 boxes it pretty much filled up the smallish freezer compartment in the fridge.

The senior meals are much better quality in terms of the meat, than what you get at the store. Actual chicken as opposed to the pressed "chicken" you get from any other provider. A little bland, I would add salt and some butter to the veggies.

In terms of quantity, the place I went did about 350 "units" this month, vs. 440 last month (which were the days leading up to Christmas). Each unit is a set or package of what they offer.

Second, I find that the convenience factor may be huge, in addition to the good pricing! I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. If you want to stick to a budget and hate shopping for food anyways, you will probably spend less and get just as good a quality meal.

Thanks Vendico!
